multiple connections

By 3lions @ Jan 04 2009 09:20 pm

I noticed i get a better picture from my satellite box when using component cables instead of hdmi but better video from my blu ray with hdmi. Can i run hdmi from the bluray to the receiverand hdmi output to the tv when watching dvd and run component cable from cable box to receiver and component out to tv

  1. I don’t see why not. What receiver model do you have? You might have to play with some of the options on the reciever and you’ll have to switch video inputs on the TV.

Yamaha HTR 6290, I replaced my pioneer elitevsx 56txi because it had no hdmi, do u know if this is a good receiver, i read many reviews which said was a great receiver for the price, so I can run hdmi for the dvd and component for the satelite but change the input for tv to component, if u have any suggestions for settings for this receiver please let me know

  3. Took me a while, but finally found the specs on your receiver here:

I guess it’s a Canadien specific model and its a great one. The specs look pretty equivalent to the Denon 3808 I own. Yours has 4 HDMI inputs, multi-zone, 130 W, HDMI upconversion, multi channel inputs, 7.1 surround sound, DTS-HD and Dolby HD capable …

Back to your original question, I would just not connect the HDMI cable from the satellite box to the receiver and connect the component instead. I know my cable box won’t output the component signal if I have HDMI hooked up. Then keep your blu-ray player hooked up with a HDMI cable. You should be able to switch between blu-ray and satellite by switching the TV between component and HDMI and switching the receiver between blu-ray and satellite inputs (for sound). I think that would be annoying so is the picture quality really better with component? Usually its better with HDMI. It would be alot easier if you could just switch the receiver inputs.

ok let me clarify, when I had the satelite box hooked to my pioneer elite 56txi with component the picture was better, my box does not have hdmi so I have component to the Yamaha receiver and hdmi out to the tv, the blu ray is fine hdmi to the receiver and out to the tv, my question is whether It would be better to run the component to the tv for viewing satelite, i have harmony 880 so its easy to switch imputs or was the pioneer just better for producing the satelite picture.
i changed the pioneer because it had no hdmi inputs.
